A new edition of the Tour de l'Abitibi Desjardins will soon be under way. This will be the 45th time! Despite the fact that the stages will be pretty much the same as last year, we can count on some innovations. Amongst them, a team from northern Africa will be featured for the first time with the participation of Team Morocco. No problem there, we are well acquainted with multi-cultural encounters! Another first national presence will be featured thanks to the participation of a rider from the Bahamas. The list finally includes a team composed of riders from Germany and Brunei. We hope that riders from Brunei speak a bit of English because our capacities in Melayu Brunei are somehow limited! We can again count on the presence of the Colombia team, so we might try a few words of Spanish over the week.
Our neighbors down south will be (again) a force to be reckoned with. Besides the American national team, USA Cycling is coming up north with three more selection teams. Add another 8 regional teams from the US to the mix.
This year also marks a few comebacks, including Gord Fraser coming back to Abitibi for the first time since his participation to the Tour in 1986. From a rather anonymous 86th spot in the GC in 1986 (the year of the infamous Michael Zanoli and Laurent Jalabert), Gord morphed into a ferocious sprinter and raced as a pro in Europe for team Motorola and won many races. He will act as team manager for ISCorp during this year's Tour.
Another comeback: Jacques Barriault and Team Andre Cycle. Jacques is addicted to the Tour and came to help as a volunteer even after his team folded.
Overall, we expect a week filled with action, high in emotion and we will do our best to keep you informed on what happens around the Tour... from the backseat!
