Repas pré-course / Pre-race meal
It was the 4th stage of the Tour tonight in Malartic and we were treated again with the traditional Malartic hot dogs, graciously offered by the Osisko mining company. Usually, cyclists eat 3 hours before the intense efforts required by cycling. Their meal consists generally of easily digested pastas. Forget greasy sauces or hot peppers. However, in Malartic, numerous riders did not resist to the delicious hot dogs less than one hour before the start of the race!!! Their strict diet was quickly thrown out the window in favour of the hot dog fumes on the BBQ!
After a race, an endurance athlete's recovery meal is usually rich in proteins and sugar. The miracle mix is often chocolate milk or yogurt and nuts or a good ol' steak with a Coca-Cola. But because we were in Malartic, the euphorizing fumes of barbecued hot dogs once again had riders lose their minds and swap the protein shake for the white bread with a frankfurter of unknown origin!
