The Challenge Sprint is a short distance road race between 3 to 4 riders working by elimination, using multiple rounds to crown a champion. This new race type was introduced by Serge Arsenault's teamto launch the racing the day before the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec three years ago. For the second time this year, it is presented the day before the first stage of the Tour de l'Abitibi. Aside from glory, riders are also motivated by the rather large amount of money awarded to the top three riders.
We were treated to a lot of suspense during the night. This spectacular event even needed a photo finish to determine the winner of the semi-final between Peter Voellers Jr (the winner), Hendrik Pineda and Simon Ouellet. Lionel Rocheleau impressed many spectators with a very, very long sprint victorious sprint in his first round. We also noticed the sprinting talent of the sole Bahamas rider, Jay Major, also a winner in the first round.
The final round opposed Julien Roussel (Rocky Mountain), Peter Voellers Jr (Mid-Atlantic) and Edouard Dumas-Longpré (André Cycle). The latter was crowned champion after a tight sprint that kept us on the edge of our seat, although almost no one had a seat. Anyhow, it bodes well for the rest of the week!
