Après vous avoir présenté Rouyn-Noranda et parlé de la première journée d'activités officielles au Tour de l'Abitibi, pourquoi ne pas continuer sur cette lancée et vous donner un bref aperçu de l'étape 1 qui sera courue demain mardi le 19 juillet?
Le départ se donnera à Amos. Ah, Amos... Ville raffinée et pieuse de l'Abitibi connue pour son eau pure, sa cathédrale et sa micro-brasserie Belgh Brasse! Si un domaine en particulier vous intéresse, il y a quelqu'un qui connaît ça à Amos, c'est sûr!
Amos est aussi un terreau fertile pour le cyclisme en Abitibi, surtout avec le programme sports-étude dédié au vélo. On n'a qu'à penser à Karol-Ann Canuel qui évolue au plus haut échelon du cyclisme féminin pour l'équipe Boels-Dolmans ou chez les hommes à Kevin Lacombe qui a terminé une belle carrière il y a quelques années chez Spidertech.
Les choses sérieuses commencent donc devant la cathédrale d'Amos ou le Tim Horton's, selon votre culte personnel favori. Départ neutralisé sur deux kilomètres qui devrait normalement donner lieu à quelques accrochages, tradition oblige. Après la sortie d'Amos, direction Preissac où les pires montagnes de l'Abitibi attendent de pied ferme le peloton! Quoique modestes, ces quelques ondulations topographiques devraient étirer le peloton et malheureusement déjà condamner quelques coureurs. Les coureurs seront longtemps à Preissac, un village qui fait plus de 30 kilomètres de longueur entre sa limite nord, le dépanneur, et la marina au sud. Ensuite, les coureurs passeront devant la plus profonde mine de l'Abitibi avec un puits de 2.2km de profondeur et du minerai jusqu'à 3.1km de profondeur! Un sprint y est prévu avec en arrière-plan l'odeur typique d'une usine de traitement de minerai. À vous d'y déceler les doux parfums mélangés. Peu après, virage à droite sur la route 117, direction Rouyn-Noranda. Comme nous passons ici pour l'étape 2, je réserve quelques détails pour le prochain article. À l'arrivée dans la ville de Rouyn-Noranda, trois tours d'une circuit de 3.7km, question de donner un bon spectacle aux citoyens. Le circuit est nouveau par rapport à 2013 et il comporte un faux-plat qui pourrait s'avérer usant au terme d'une étape. Nous aurons aussi au terme de cette étape notre premier leader de l'édition 2016. Les paris sont ouverts!
After introducing Rouyn-Noranda and presented the first day of activities at the Tour de l'Abitibi, it is probably a good idea to combine these approaches and give you a sneak peek at tomorrow's Stage 1 to be held on Tuesday, July 19.
The stage start is in Amos. Mmmmm, Amos... Abitibi's sophisticated and devout city, known for its purest water of all, its cathedral and the Belgh Brasse microbrewery. If you have a particular area of interest, whatever it is, someone in Amos knows a whole lot about it, that's for sure!
Amos is also the source of many good Abitibian cyclists. First comes to mind Karol-Ann Canuel, who is currently racing at women's road racing highest level with the Boels-Dolmans team. on the men's side, Kevin Lacombe recently retired after a successful carreer with Spidertech.
The real deal will therefore start in Amos in front of the cathedral, or Tim Horton's, depending on your personal favorite denomination. The 2km controlled start should be nervous and we may experience a low-speed wreck, as usual. After exiting Amos, let's go south towards Preissac where Abitibi's worst hills are expected to string up the field and even drop a few riders. Riders will be in Preissac for quite a while since the village is over 30km long, between the convenience store at the north end all the way to the marina. Right after the marina, riders will pass by the Laronde mine, the deepest underground mine of Abitibi with a 2.2km shaft straight down and ore reserves down to 3.1km! Riders will also sprint in front of the mine with the sweet smell so typical of ore mills in the background. You can try to identify the lovely perfumes mixed together! Not too long after the mine, right-hand corner on highway 117 towards Rouyn-Noranda. Since stage 2 will go through the same stretch of road, I will save a few informations for tomorrow. In Rouyn-Noranda will be 3 laps of a 3.7km circuit to give a good show to the spectators. The circuit is different from 2013 and includes a false-flat that should wear out riders at the end of a long stage. The end of stage one will also celebrate our first GC leader of 2016. The bets are open!
