Demi-étapes 3 et 4 / Half-stages 3 and 4

Magnez-vous bordel de merde. On passe!

Un menu bien rempli attend les coureurs demain. Deux demi-étapes dont un contre-la-montre individuel (CLMI) de 9.6km à Rouyn-Noranda le matin et une courte course sur route à Malartic en fin de journée.

Le classement général devrait être chamboulé à la suite du CLMI et nous donner un bon aperçu des coureurs qui se disputeront la victoire finale au terme du Tour de l'Abitibi dimanche prochain. Nul besoin de vous présenter Rouyn-Noranda une deuxième fois pour cette demi-étape. Nous dirons seulement que le parcours emprunte la piste cyclable du lac Osisko. Comme les vents risquent de souffler fort, la traversée de la digue en terrain exposé sera à surveiller, surtout sur les vélo de chrono avec roues pleines et guidons profilés. Selon la direction du vent, un coureur pourrait soit être soufflé dans l'eau propre du lac ou dans celle du parc à résidus miniers! Les coureurs auront bien fait de reconnaître le parcours puisqu'il comporte de nombreux virages. Les français l'ont même parcouru en voiture... Nous avons d'ailleurs reçu un appel à ce propos.

Notre journée se terminera à Malartic, ville au coeur de tous les débats sur l'acceptabilité sociale au Québec depuis la mise production d'une énorme mine d'or à ciel ouvert. Plus de 180 maisons ont été déménagées pour faire place à la mine. Malartic se distingue aussi grâce à la présence d'un hôpital psychiatrique régional. La ville a donc été affublée de nombreux surnoms péjoratifs a ce sujet au fil du temps. La ville est aussi l'hôte d'un festival western avec rodéo compétitif. Un musée minéralogique y est présent et offre des visites de la mine. Qu'on aime la mine ou pas, sa présence a transformé la ville en la dotant d'infrastructures municipales grandement améliorées. La mine vous offrira d'ailleurs des hot-dogs et rafraichissements gratuits demain. Aussi, le réaménagement des rues a permis d'éliminer deux des trois feux de circulations sur la route 117 dans la ville. Un grand soulagement pour tous ceux qui transitent par Malartic souvent! Au terme de la demi-étape de Malartic, aucun changement notable ne devrait arriver au classement au terme d'une étape courte, très rapide, mais sans grande difficulté.

A double header awaits the riders tomorrow. Two half-stages including a 9.6km individual time trial (ITT) in Rouyn-Noranda in the morning and a short road race in Malartic later during the day.

The general classification will be shuffled following the ITT and we should then be able to identify the select few riders that will be battling for the final victory by the Tour's end on Sunday. No need to introduce Rouyn-Noranda as the host city for the ITT. Let's just say that the course follows the bike path circling lake Osisko. Strong winds are forecasted and it could get sketchy on the dike with no shelter whatsoever, especially while riding a TT bike with a disc wheel and aero bars. Depending on wind direction, riders could end up on the clean water side of lake Osisko or in the mine tailings pond! All riders previewed the course due to the numerous bends and corners. The French team even previewed it by car... We did received a phone call about that.

Our day will end in Malartic, a city hotly debated in all forums on the mining's industry's social acceptibility in Quebec since a large-volume open-pit gold mine was put in production. Over 180 houses were moved to make way for the pit. Malartic is also known for its regional psychiatric hospital. It was therefore plagued with many pejorative nicknames over time. The city hosts a western festival complete with a rodeo competition. A mineralogy museum can be found and it offers tours of the mine. Like it or not, the mine brought many new and improved municipal services and infrastructures for citizens. The mine will also offer spectators of the stage free hot-dogs and refreshments tomorrow. Also, the redeseigned streets allowed the elimination of two out of three traffic lights on highway 117 in the city. It is appreciated by all who travel often through Malartic. The half-stage in Malartic should not influence the GC so much, as it is fast but short and flat.
