Here is an update on young american rider number 166 from the Flagstaff Selection team, Clayton Stone. After breaking a pedal cleat during the Challenge Sprint and forgetting to bring his jersey and bib numbers to the start of stage 1, he also crashed under the rain during stage 2 between Amos and Val-d'Or. However, CJ Stone was able to turn his fortunes around since yesterday by producing very noticeable results on the bike. The short and ultra-fast Malartic stage (51.5 km, average speed of 49km/h!) saw Clayton finish 5th of a tight downhill sprint. He was the sole regional team rider to crack the top 10, the rest of the top finishers being all from well-supported national and provincial teams.
Today during the fifth stage, the Lebel-sur-Quevillon circuit race, Clayton was often one of the front runners, taking part in at least two breakaways and being part of chasing group composed of a trio of Flagstaff Selection riders. On the last lap, he was alone in front of the pack, going all-in for the win. It took a full regiment of US National team riders to bring him back to the pack, and despite his relentless efforts, he managed to finish 23rd inside the pack after another speedfest (104km at an average speed of 46.6km/h).
Despite his earlier misfortunes, Clayton stands a respectable 26th on the general classification after five stages, only 2:56 behind GC leader Brandon McNulty. Better still, his position fares better than many riders with higher profiles. He started racing bikes on BMX's at age 5, then raced mountain bikes and is now focusing on road racing. This already long carreer certainly helped him find the grit to perform well here. It is his second time in Abitibi, and he will now be remembered for the good reasons!
