Une publication sérieuse, mais importante.


Durant les premières étapes du Tour cette année, vous risquez de croiser deux bénévoles venus de loin et qui reviennent d’encore plus loin. Elizabeth et Michael Carey habitent en Virginie aux USA et sont impliqués dans le cyclisme à titre de commissaires, parents et toutes autres tâches connexes. Ils sont bien connus du milieu du vélo américain.


Leur fils Thomas a fait le Tour en 2015 et en 2016. Après l’édition 2015, ils ont contacté l’organisation du Tour et offert leurs services comme bénévoles pour l’année suivante, sachant qu’ils seraient de retour alors que Thomas reviendrait certainement à sa 2^e année chez les juniors. Michael étant motocycliste, ils sont devenus en 2016 moto-info et ardoise. De vrais pros maniant jusqu’à trois chronomètres simultanément et relayant les informations de manière efficace. Michael se permettait même quelques mots en français! Il est passé maître dans l’annonce du « Il n’y a plus d’échappée! » 

En 2017 et 2018, les Carey ont pris des vacances personnelles, sont partis de Virginie pour venir passer la semaine en Abitibi comme bénévoles, même si Thomas ne participait au Tour. C’était aussi l’occasion de profiter de la poutine et de rapporter une précieuse cargaison de fromage en grains jusqu’en Virginie.


Les Carey ont aussi deux autres fils, Christopher et David. David, le cadet de la famille, a suivi les traces de Thomas et s’est lancé à fond dans le vélo. En 2016, il a profité de sa présence avec sa famille en Abitibi pour participer au Tour de la Relève. Peu de temps après, le malheur a frappé, David ayant développé une leucémie.


Le combat de David a été particulièrement difficile, ponctué de difficiles traitements, de lueurs d’espoir et de rechutes, vraiment pas ce qu’on souhaite à un garçon de 11 ou 12 ans. À chaque fois que David allait mieux, c’était sur son vélo qu’il voulait être, mais à chaque fois, la maladie lui reprenait son vélo.


Le combat de David ayant été largement relayé sur les réseaux sociaux, une communauté entière est devenue solidaire des Carey. Cela incluait des gens d’Abitibi, des USA, des cyclistes professionnels touchés par le jeune homme et même la compagnie Trek qui a offert ce printemps à David un Trek Madone extra haut-de-gamme, roues en carbone et gruppo électronique inclus. David a pu l’enfourcher dans le stationnement de l’hôpital.


Le 7 juin dernier, la maladie a emporté David. À 13 ans.


Elizabeth et Michael nous avaient avertis l’hiver dernier qu’en 2019, ils ne seraient pas des nôtres, l’état de santé de David étant trop précaire.


Et bien ils seront avec nous au début du Tour, en escale durant un voyage de moto devant les mener jusqu’au Nouveau-Brunswick (Virginie, Abitibi, Nouveau-Brunswick, c’est le même coin…) Nos amis méritent une pause, méritent un sourire et méritent d’être heureux. On leur a préparé un petit quelque chose pour honorer David. Si vous les croisez, dites-leur merci d’être avec nous. Merci mes amis.

During the first stages of the Tour this year, you may encounter two volunteers from far away who are returning from a place even further. Elizabeth and Michael Carey live in Virginia, USA, and are involved in cycling as commissaires, parents and all other related tasks. They are well known in the American cycling community.


Their son Thomas raced the Tour in 2015 and 2016. After the 2015 edition, they contacted the organization of the Tour and offered to become volunteers for the following year, knowing that they would be back while Thomas would race again for 2^nd year as a junior. Michael being a motorcyclist, they became our moto-info and time board. They are real pros handling chronometers perfectly (up to three at a time!) and relaying information efficiently. Michael even allowed himself a few words in French! He quickly mastered the announcement “Il n’y a plus d’échappée” or, "There is no more breakaway!”

In 2017 and 2018, the Careys took personal vacations, and travelled from Virginia to spend the week in Abitibi as volunteers, even if Thomas did not race the Tour anymore. It was also an opportunity to enjoy poutine and bring a precious cargo of cheese curds back to Virginia.


The Careys have two other sons, Christopher and David. David, the youngest of the family, followed in Thomas' footsteps and also raced his bike. In 2016, he took advantage of his presence with his family in Abitibi to participate in the Tour de la Relève. Shortly after, misfortune struck, David having developed leukemia.


David's fight was particularly difficult, punctuated by difficult treatments, glimmers of hope and relapses, obviously not what an 11- or 12-year old boy expects out of life. Whenever David was better, he wanted to be on his bike. But each time, the disease took it away from under him.


Since David's fight was widely relayed on social media, an entire community became supportive of the Careys. This included people from Abitibi, USA, professional cyclists touched by the young man and even the Trek bicycle company. This spring, Trek offered David a super high-end Trek Madone, carbon wheels and electronic gruppo included. David was able to ride it in the hospital parking lot.


On June 7, the disease took David away. At 13 years old.


Elizabeth and Michael had warned us last winter that they would not be here in 2019, David's health being too precarious.


Well, after enduring all of this, the Careys will be with us at the beginning of the Tour. They will stop by during a motorcycle trip to New Brunswick (Virginia, Abitibi, New Brunswick, it's all in the same general area...) Our friends deserve a break, deserve a smile and deserve to be happy. We prepared a little surprise in honor of David. If you meet them, please thank them for being with us. Thank you my friends.
